Create a Pace of Grace in Your Life

At this busy, and beautiful time of year, it’s important to take care of ourselves. 

I’m reading a lovely book, A Pace of Grace: The Virtues of a Sustainable Life by Linda Kavelin Popov. Linda recommends we do two simple things each day to sustain our energy and peace:

1. Take proactive rest

  • Stop before you get tired

2. Pace yourself

  • Choose well and enjoy your time

These simple actions prevent burnout, enable us to enjoy life more fully, and help us become more productive.

Here are a few of my favorite ways to create a pace of grace this holiday season:

Accept what you are given today.

  • Each day brings a different rhythm a different pace, accept it and relax into it.

Surrender to what is realistic today.

  • There will always be more to do. Make your day more enjoyable by doing what is possible, not trying to make the impossible happen.

Do what you can with what you have.

  • This means taking inventory of your time, your energy, and the opportunities before you and making the most of them. Don’t fight to fit more in, accept what you can do with gratitude.

Remember, some days it goes easy, some days it goes hard.

  • Not everyday can be the most productive, the most fun, or the most anything. Some days you need to let go of all expectations and do what you can. 

May every day be a good day.

  • My friend, Sree, who recently moved back to India, liked to say, ‘every evening is a good evening.’ This book helps me understand what he means. As Linda writes, “a good day is a gentle weaving of reflection, exercise, work, rest, and play, with simple gestures of generosity and kindness.”
